Last January Ma-Luxe Studios called with a big plan. And when Ma-Luxe says big – they always mean it! I love to collaborate with other vendors who have the same passion in what they do and working to achieve the best end product possible. There’s no finer feeling at the end of the day!
So here was the situation… Ma-Luxe and the Studio Collective were looking for a team of professionals to be part in a ‘Give-Away Wedding’ unlike anything Victoria had ever seen. The full process – from initial concept down to the home purchase for the happy couple at the end of it all! What a huge opportunity! The ‘Wedding Give-Away’ was valued at over $30,000 – and we rolled out the news of this exciting package at the Modern Bride Wedding Show in January at the Bay Centre in downtown Victoria. Naturally there was a lot of buzz regarding this incredible opportunity to be the lucky winners. There were roughly 200 couples that entered into the fun and quirky little entry we had set up. Fast forward to sometime in March when Dana & Michael found out they were the ‘lucky couple’ who had won this amazing experience. We all fell in love with them right away! Their love story is one of the best around and we were so excited to be a small part of it. With a wedding date of May 24th, 2014 – we jumped into high gear to pull off this stunning wedding. It was a lot of meetings jam packed into a short amount of time. But hey – I’m more than proud of what this team achieved in our goal of offering a full service gorgeous wedding for them and really showcase what we could do!
At our initial consultation Dana and Michael described their vision for the big day as classy, unique, yet quirky and fun wedding. They wanted their wedding to be very interactive and family oriented with lots of games and entertainment for their guests. When I heard that they were all (including their kids – Malina & Gowah) wearing red converse shoes with their wedding gear – I knew that they weren’t joking! They wanted a great big garden wedding and had the Abkhazi Gardens and the Parkside Hotel booked as their venues. I loved this! The Abkhazi Gardens are classic gorgeous (perfect for the ceremony) and the Parkside was a very industrial space with tons of opportunity to create a stunning ‘modern indoor garden’ for the reception.
Marika from Rock, Paper, Square and I did a site meeting together to discuss what we could create in the space and I think both of our creative brains did a little ‘happy dance’ when we saw it. Basically a blank canvass to just ‘play’ – now this is the best thing that two designers could ever hear! The ceilings at the Parkside are insanely tall and have some fantastic exposed lights that feel like they hang for miles – which was honestly probably my most favourite part of the ‘space’. I knew instantly that I wanted to create some hanging ‘fresh’ chandeliers to lower the feeling of the ceiling height and add a really cool and unique aspect to the venue. Honestly when the lights warmed up a bit the smell of eucalyptus, lavenders and other herbs was intoxicatingly devine! To have full freedom by the bride and groom to build and indoor garden was too much fun! Working with Marika was an absolute treat – this woman is so talented and we definitely had A LOT of time to get to know each other! I don’t think I’ve ever pulled off so many hours on one project in such a short amount of time as this one – but looking back at the sight of it all – it was worth it!
All couples have their little ‘thing’ or their ‘saying’, something unique that only ‘they’ understand – for Dana & Michael – it was all about Purple and Sparkles. So naturally the bride’s bouquet had to incorporate some gorgeous elements of purple! Dana had also requested a little touch of a butterfly in her bouquet in memory of her grandfather who had recently passed and who was a huge influence in her life. I was able to locate a stunning little sparkly jeweled purple butterfly to tuck in the back of her bouquet, so that she felt as if he were there along with her on her wedding day – this kind of stuff melts my heart!‘The Meaning of Flowers’ – I truly believe that the flowers a woman chooses to carry on her wedding day reflect her values in life, love and the future she is creating – (even if this is done subconsciously). We are all drawn to certain flowers and colours – that’s what makes us all unique….
Here are the flowers and their meanings for Dana’s bouquet – Stunning!!
